The videos of Indian cricket women's captain Harmanpreet Kaur are going viral on the social media. Ugly scenes were witnessed between Indian and Bangladesh teams after the Indian team was not happy with the umpires as the series decider ended in a tie to ensure the series ends in a 1-1 draw at the Sher-E-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur.
It is worth noting that both on-field umpires, the third umpire, and the match referee were all from Bangladesh.
What happened?
Harmanpreet was frustrated after her dismissal and the India captain was evidently fuming at the umpire. While walking back to the dressing room, the skipper smashed her bat into the stumps and was seen having an angry exchange with the umpires.
Later, she did not mince her words at the 'pathetic' umpiring and called out the decisions in the post-match press conference while instituting home bias.
"A lot of learning from this game ceremony. Even apart from the cricket, the type of umpiring that was happening there, we were very surprised. The next time whenever we are coming to Bangladesh, we'll have to make sure we have to deal with this kind of umpiring and accordingly, we'll have to prepare ourselves," said Harmanpreet.
Ugly scenes at the post-match presentation
After the series ended in a draw, reports suggest that the Indian captain did not stop her outrage at the decision-making even during the end-of-series photograph of both teams as the two captains shared the trophy. As both teams prepared for a joint photograph, the 34-year-old asked the Bangladesh players to invite the umpires to their team photo too.
"Bring the umpires too. Why you are only here? You haven't tied the match. The umpires did it for you. Call them up! We better have photo with them as well," said Harmanpreet to the home side, according to local reporters.
Bangladesh team walks away from photo session
After Harmanpreet's “bring the umpires too” statement, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana Joty walked off with her team. She did not mince her words either: “It is totally her [Kaur’s] problem. I have nothing to do with it. As a player, she could have shown better manners. I can’t tell you what happened, but it didn’t feel right to be there with my team. It wasn’t the right environment. That’s why we went back. Cricket is a game of discipline and respect.
“The umpires [Muhammad Kamruzzaman and Tanvir Ahmed] wouldn’t give her out if she wasn’t out … We have respected their decisions. The umpire’s decision is the final decision, whether I like it or not. Why didn’t we behave in that way?”
ICC takes strict action against Harmanpreet Kaur
The International Cricket Council has fined India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur for her behaviour during the third and final ODI against Bangladesh. The apex body has deducted 75 percent of her match fee and added 3 demerit points to her record.
Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana called for a neutral umpiring system. "In any match, sometimes it happens that you are not really happy with the kind of… especially when there is no DRS in the series this time. We expect a little better level - I would term it in a better way that, better level of umpiring in terms of some decisions, because it was very evident in some decisions, there was not even a second thought given if the ball hit the pad. Not even one-second thought was given and the finger went up," said Mandhana in the post-match press conference.
"I am sure that ICC, the BCB and the BCCI will definitely have a discussion on that, maybe we have a neutral umpiring system so that we do not sit here having this discussion, maybe we can focus on cricket and cricket-oriented questions," Mandhana concluded.
