Copenhagen, Aug 26: India’s highest-ranked men’s singles player HS Prannoy found his way back after a game down to beat defending champion Viktor Axelsen at the Roal Arena in the quarterfinals in Copenhagen, Denmark on Friday. Now, he has assured himself his first BWF World Championships medal.
Prannoy defeated World No.1 by 13-21, 21-15, 21-16. This victory makes him the fifth Indian men’s singles player to win a medal in the BWF World Championships.
The World No. 7 Prannoy also maintained India’s record of having at least one medallist in the prestigious event since 2011.
“Finally, I have a World Championships medal. Before coming for the World Championships, we had a week's time and all we did was practice few shots. I didn't try anything new for this tournament,” said Prannoy.
The Indian men's doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty crashed out in the quarterfinals on Friday. World No 2 pair Satwiksairaj-Chirag lost in straight games 21-18, 21-19 against World No 11 Danish opponents Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen.
Prannoy is the only challenge left for India in the tournament.
