India woke up to the shocking news of Indian legendary boxer Mary Kom announcing retirement reports. However, she has refuted claims of her retirement, stating that she was misquoted during an event where she discussed the challenges posed by age limits in sports.
In a statement addressing media reports, she clarified that she will personally announce her retirement and condemned the inaccuracies in recent coverage.
In a statement released on Thursday, Mary affirmed that she remains active and hasn't officially retired. She stated, "Dear Friends from the media, I haven't announced retirement yet, and I have been misquoted. I will personally come in front of the media whenever I want to announce it."
This came after Mary Kom, during an event in Dibrugarh on January 24, 2024, highlighted the restrictive age limit in the Olympics despite having hunger and passion for continuing in the sport.
"I was attending a school event in Dibrugarh on 24 January 2024 wherein I was motivating children and I said “I still have hunger of achieving in sports but the age limit in Olympics doesn’t allow me to participate though I can carry on with my sport. I am still focusing on my fitness and whenever I will announce retirement I will inform everyone," she clarified.
Mary Kom, a trailblazer in women's boxing, has achieved six world titles and being the first female Indian boxer to secure a gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games and a bronze medal in the 2012 London Olympic Games and multiple World Championships titles.
