While her father was receiving the award, her family sitting in the back broke down as they remembered their late daughter. Notably, Savita lost her life in an avalanche in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi hills on 4 October 2022.

Savita Kanswal was the first Indian woman to scale Mount Everest and Mount Makalu in a span of 16 days. Kanswal, 25, had set a national record by hoisting the tricolour on Everest, the world's highest peak, in May 2022.

The ace mountaineer had been serving as an instructor for the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering's Advanced Mountaineering Course (NIM) in Draupadi's Danda Peak when she met with her death. Born to Radheshyam Kanswal and Kamleshwari Devi, she was the youngest of four sisters. Savita, who had humble origins, was ambitious and had the courage and resolve to fulfill her dreams, Col Bisht added.

Savita had done her basic, advance, search and rescue and mountaineering instructor's courses from the NIM in 2013 and had been working as an instructor at the institute since 2018.
