"Wrestler Sushil Kumar has been arrested by a team of Special Cell," said Neeraj Thakur, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell). One of Kumar’s associates, Ajay, has been arrested too. The case has been transferred to the Crime Branch and Kumar has been sent to six days in police custody by a court.

Kumar, a Padma Shri, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award recipient, was running through states - Delhi, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh to escape from Police. However, he finally nabbed in Mundka near the Delhi-Haryana border while he was on a two-wheeler trying to escape from the clutches of Delhi Police. The use of a dongle to browse the internet on a mobile phone, which was without a SIM card, helped police narrow their search.

Kumar is facing charges of murder, abduction and criminal conspiracy related to a violent clash on May 4 between two groups at Delhi’s Chhatrasal wrestling academy. Wrestler Sagar Dhankhar, who was involved in the clash, succumbed to his injuries in hospital. Sherawat, Kumar’s friend and fellow wrestler from Chhatrasal academy who had also gone missing, is the son of Congress Councillor from Vikaspuri Suresh Kumar Sherawat.

Sushil is considered to be one of the most successful athletes in the country as he won a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics, and four years earlier, he had brought home a bronze medal in Beijing Olympics.

Delhi Police had earlier announced a reward of Rs 1 lakh for any information that leads to the arrest of wrestler Sushil Kumar, who was on the run in connection with the case.
