Southampton, June 19: In the honor of legendary athlete Milkha Singh, Team Indian players were seen sporting black armbands as a mark of respect towards veteran sportsperson. Singh, 91, passed away in Chandigarh on Friday night.
Team India is up against New Zealand in the World Test Championship final here from June 18-22. The Day 1 of the WTC final was called off due to rain. Before the resumption of Day 2, the BCCI announced that "Team India is wearing black armbands in remembrance of Milkha Singhji, who passed away due to COVID-19."
Earlier in the day, Earlier today, Indian captain Virat Kohli paid tribute to the former Indian sprinter, who is a four-time Asian Games gold medallist and the 1958 Commonwealth Games champion. "A legacy that inspired a whole nation to aim for excellence. To never give up and chase your dreams. Rest in Peace #MilkhaSingh ji Folded hands. You will never be forgotten," Kohli tweeted.

Days after his wife and former volleyball captain Nirmal Kaur passed away, four-time Asian Games gold medallist Milkha Singh passed away due to post-Covid complications at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) hospital.

He had tested negative and was shifted out of COVID-ICU but the legendary athlete lost a long battle after developing fever and a dip in oxygen saturation level from Thursday night in the medical ICU of the PGI hospital.
