Tokyo Olympics Medalist Lovlina Borgohain appointed DSP in Assam Police

Dispur, Jan 12: In a major development, Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain has been appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) by the Assam government on Wednesday. The DSP insignia of the Assam police were clipped on Lovlina Borgohain’s shoulders by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. She also took oath as Assam police DSP in the function.

  

 

Sarma presented the boxing champ with her appointment letter at a ceremony in Guwahati. “This day will remain very memorable for me as I have joined Assam Police. I would like to thank the state government for this honour,” said Lovlina. The Assam CM assured her a monthly sum of ₹100,000 (apart from her salary) to help in her training.

 

“We are very happy to appoint Borgohain in Assam Police,” said Sarma. He added, “She will automatically be eligible for the position of IPS provided she clears her graduation in the next few years.”

 

 

On October 29 last year, the Assam cabinet approved the appointment of Olympic medal-winning boxer Lovlina Borgohain as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Assam Police.

 

Lovlina Borgohain became the third Indian boxer to finish on the Olympic podium after six-time world champion M C Mary Kom and Vijender Singh. In September last year, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had presented a cheque of Rs 1 crore to the Olympic boxing bronze medalist and offered the post of DSP in the state police at a felicitation programme held in Guwahati.

 

Earlier, ace sprinter Hima Das who is also known as ‘Dhing Express’ was appointed as DSP in the state police by the Assam government.

 

Lovlina Borgohain said that she is feeling proud after being appointed as DSP and she will concentrate on sports as well. “It will be my duty to win more medals for Assam and the country. I will focus on my training. As long as I play boxing, I will not have to do policing duty. I will join in policing duties after retirement from boxing. From now, a new responsibility has come into my life. I will try to find more talented players. I am very much thankful to the Assam government for giving me this job,” Lovlina Borgohain said.
