Mohali, Mar 4: Star Indian batter Virat Kohli has added another feature to his decorated hat as he crossed the 8000-run mark in Tests during the first Test against Sri Lanka underway at the PCA stadium in Mohali on Friday.
The match is also his 100th in Tests, only the 12th player in Indian history to achieve it. In 100 games so far, he has scored 8000 runs with a high score of 254*. He also averages 50.63 in the format, scoring 27 hundreds and 28 fifties.
Kohli also joins an elite list of Indian batters to have breached this mark. Before him, Sachin Tendulkar (15921), Rahul Dravid (13265), Sunil Gavaskar (10122), VVS Laxman (8781), and Virender Sehwag (8503) managed to surpass the milestone.
Among Indians, Kohli is the fourth highest in the number of centuries list. Tendulkar scored 51 and leads the charts while Dravid and Gavaskar come in second and third place with 36 and 34 centuries respectively.
Earlier, Kohli was felicitated ahead of his 100th Test by his childhood idol and current Team India head coach, Rahul Dravid. He was grateful to be part of the Indian team and also said that he is very proud of playing so many games in the purest format.
“My wife is here with me, my brother is there in the stands. It’s a team game and the journey wouldn’t have been possible without you guys. In present day cricket, with the amount we play with three formats and an IPL, the one takeaway the next generation can take from me is that I played 100 games in the purest format,” Kohli said ahead of the day’s play.
