Hardik Pandya is Mumbai Indians’ new captain and will lead the five-time champions in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. He was traded to MI from Gujarat Titans in an all-cash deal. With the move finalised, there has been a report by The Indian Express coming forward with speculation that Mumbai Indians paid a hefty transfer fee for the all-rounder.

Hardik Pandya Rs 100 crores

No specific figure was mentioned but it has been estimated that INR 100 crore was paid to Gujarat Titans to let go of Pandya.

Reports suggest that one of the biggest factors that brought Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians was the mega auction of the tournament in 2025. The five-time champions are looking to establish their core team for the future and with former skipper Rohit Sharma in the twilight of his career, opting for Pandya as someone who can lead the side to victory.

Furthermore, the sale of Pandya helped Gujarat Titans in several ways as well. Back in 2021, CVC Capital paid INR 5625 crore to be part of the IPL, while MI is run by a business family, the same is not the case for GT. It is worth noting that the trade deal of Pandya saw Gujarat’s purse go up by INR 15 crore.

Pandya, Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians

Pandya was with Gujarat for two years and led the franchise to their maiden title in the first season itself. In the previous edition, the Gujarat-based team made it to the final but lost to Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

After spending two successful seasons with Titans, Hardik returned to his previous team. MI was his first IPL franchise and he won four titles with them. Pandya was not retained for IPL 2022 and was signed by GT.

Meanwhile, his return hasn’t gone well with some Mumbai players. Jasprit Bumrah and Suryakumar Yadav have registered their displeasure through social media. The two senior pros were overlooked for captaincy despite staying with them for years. Even fans are angry and many even left social media pages of the franchise.
