Mohun Bagan Super Giant clinched the Durand Cup title for the first time in 23 years, defeating arch-rivals East Bengal 1-0 in Kolkata on Sunday. This is Mohun Bagan's first Durand Cup title in 23 years, coming at Kolkata's Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK) with close to 50,000 fans watching the game.
Despite being reduced to 10 men after Anirudh Thapa was given a red card in the 62nd minute, Mohun Bagan showcased remarkable resilience. It was Petratos who emerged as the hero of the day, securing the victory with a remarkable solo effort in the 71st minute. The Australian footballer skilfully weaved past the East Bengal defence to unleash a powerful strike from 25 yards. East Bengal goalkeeper Prabhsukhan Singh Gill was left a mute spectator.
Mohun Bagan last won the title in 2000 when they beat Mahindra United via a golden goal.
Amidst, several videos flooded internet in which Indian Army troops were seen dancing and celebrating the win of Mohun Bagan against East Bengal and lifting the title of Durand Cup.
An unmatched rivalry
Mohun Bagan SG and East Bengal FC are two of the most successful teams in the Durand Cup, having won a record 16 titles each before Sunday's title clash.
Mohun Bagan avenged their 2004 Durand Cup final defeat to East Bengal when they had lost 1-2. Since then, Mohun Bagan has lost three Durand Cup finals, the last being against Gokulam Kerala (1-2) in 2019.
From East Bengal's perspective, a national-level title continued to elude them for more than 11 years now. Their last title at senior-level remains the Federation Cup in 2012.
