This came during an event organized in Rajkot on Wednesday (February 14) ahead of the third Test between India and England and said that he is confident Men in Blue will lift the title under his leadership.

“Main apko promise karna chahta hoon ki Rohit Sharma ki kaptaani mein 2024 mein Barbados mein hum jarur Bharat ka jhanda gadenge (I want to promise you that we'll lift the trophy in Barbados in the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit Sharma's captaincy),” he said.

After Shah made the official announcement of India’s captain, Rohit, who attended the event, was seen clapping and giving a reaction that is now going viral on the internet.

The 2024 edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be played in June. The tournament will be hosted by the West Indies and the United States of America. The 20-team tournament will start on June 1 (June 2 IST) with a match between co-hosts USA and Canada in Dallas, and the final is scheduled to take place at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados, on June 29. India will open its campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024 on Wednesday (June 5) against Ireland, and the high-voltage match against Pakistan will be played on June 9 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.

Rohit was the captain of the Indian team that reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in 2022. But after India lost the semi-final against England by 10 wickets on November 10, 2022, he didn't play a single T20I match in 2023. There were reports that he might never play T20Is for India again, but all those rumours were put to bed when he returned as India’s captain for a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in January 2024. He even justified his comeback by scoring a century (121*) in the third T20I played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on January 17.

India have had Hardik Pandya as their full-time skipper in the shortest format but the heartbreaking loss in the final of the 2023 World Cup to Australia has reignited the murmurs of senior batters Virat Kohli and Rohit returning for the T20 showpiece in June.
